New Build Permission -change to keep existing house

In the process of obtaining planning permission for a new build after demolishing the old property. An extension has been refused for the property and a new build is the what we have been told is the only solution.
However, we can build the same property by keeping the existing one. Same location, appearance and internal layout etc.
Is there anyway to change the granted planning permission (assumed at this stage) to demonstrate this.
It would be more economically and environmentally viable to keep the existing property. Any help much appreciated.
