Double-storey side extension - possible?

We are planning on purchasing a home for which a double-storey side extension would be very beneficial. The side extension would be quite small (7sq m per floor) and not go beyond the existing side elevation. But given the <1m proximity to the side boundary wall I am a little nervous that this may not be allowed. Logic says it should be as a neighbouring house has done this so it would be good to hear what you think and if this is fairly straightforward to get planning permission for. The style of the extension will be in line with the existing house.
