Built without PP

Selling a cottage on behalf of parents and have found out original owners (both deceased) built it apparently without PP. The property is attached to a Grade II Listed Building and apparently on the location of a former barn that was derelict but similarly attached to the Listed Building. This dwelling was built in the 1970's and has been occupied ever since. Can anyone assist on where we stand legally? Can the local authority demand it be demolished although it's been inhabited for over 40 years and all Rates/Council tax been paid etc? Is it a simple question of a retrospective application being made, circa 40 years after it been built?

After 4 years, it’s Lawful so you’re “quite” within the realms of having to face it being demolished.

Hi, I don't understand your answer, sorry. If it's Lawful after 4 years, how is it quite likely to face demolition after 40 ? Or am I missing something ?

Slight incorrect wording. After 4 years, exempt from action including demolition.
