Planning permission for garden fence?

Hi,

I think the answer here is yes. Do I need planning permission if I want to take down a large (dying) 10' conifer hedge that runs the perimiter between our garden and public sidewalk and replace it with a fence. We're not looking to erect a 10' fence, 6'-7' would be sufficient.

Assuming the answer is yes, what's the feasibility of getting this through? Should I look into some professional pre planning support and feasibility?

Thanks

On the assumption the sidewalk is not adjacent or forms part of a highway for vehicles, then you should be allowed to erect a fence or wall up to 2m.

However, this has come up before and there have also been quite a few Appeal cases where it has deemed a public footpath is still a considered a highway.

No reason for additional Planning support. It’s fairly straight forward. If in doubt, you could seek the Council’s informal Pre-application advice.

Thanks.

Apologies, maybe I wasn't clear . The hedge runs along our garden perimiter directly adjacent to the footpath and road so is adjacent.

I looked at the pre planning guidance but for south glos that is still a couple hundred quid. Although all the documentation talks about building works, change in use, listed buildings etc and not mention of fences etc.

I'll try calling tomorrow and see how far I get.

Thanks.

You’ll therefore require Planning for anything over 1m.
