PP for flat awnings

I live on the second floor of a small block of flats that has exceptionally large south-facing windows overlooking a private balcony. During the summer months, temperatures inside the flat can reach up to 35°C with the windows open, and up to 40°C if the windows are closed. To alleviate this problem, my neighbours and I, (who all face the same issue), would like to install retractable awnings.

Our landlord has agreed to the idea in principle, but we need to know whether we will need to seek planning permission. We are not in a conservation area, and the flats are four storeys high. However, the awnings may potentially be quite large, e.g. 5m x 2m.

Thank you.

Yes as flats do not have PD rights.
