Cloakrooms - one of the most important rooms in the house!

Ripples - LavoMost house guests will not have the opportunity to see a beautiful bathroom upstairs but more often than not will use the cloakroom. Lisa Hammond, Senior Designer at Ripples tells how to make the most of them.

  • Keeping everything off the floor, including the use of wall mounted WC's, create the feeling of space and helps with ease of cleaning too
  • Create interest using patterned tiles with wallpaper texture
  • Add splashes of colour - coloured glass for windowsills, splash backs or entire walls. Mosaics, which in large areas may become cost prohibitive are perfect for cloakrooms with their smaller proportions
  • Basins and furniture curves are a better option than square as they are softer and less obtrusive and if choosing furniture go for high gloss finishes which have a reflective surface which opens up the space too
  • Freestanding stone basins such as Finwood cone or wall mounted free-flow styles such as the Pli and Lavo ranges from Burgbad are perfect for the cloakroom. Burgbad have launched specific ranges for cloakrooms adding storage solutions as well as fabulous design ideas
  • Larger tiles can also make the room look longer depending on how you place them. I would personally go for lighter tiles like limestone to keep the space light and keep the same tiles for floor and wall to create a seamless appearance, the use of large format tiles makes a room feel more spacious as they have less grout lines and therefore look less busy
  • Lighting in recessed areas or low level lights add atmosphere and clever high tech options include motion sensor switches to automatically turn on lights and extractor fans. Large mirrors especially those incorporating extra lighting help to create a feeling of space and opulence
